Wall Padding: How to Choose Gym Wall Protection
Four decisions determine price and service life: backing, thickness, mounting and cover. We go through each one and calculate the area from the gym's perimeter.

Wall padding is a soft panel on the gym wall that absorbs the impact when an athlete is thrown off the mat. In wrestling and sambo this happens regularly: a throw carries on by inertia, and the partner only stops when he hits the wall. A bare wall in this situation means an injury; with padding, it means a bruise or nothing at all.
The choice comes down to four decisions: whether you need a rigid backing, what thickness, how to mount it and what to cover it with. We will go through each one and, at the end, calculate the area and cost.
What the padding is made of
Every wall pad has three layers. The difference between the lines lies only in what goes into each layer.
| Layer | Options | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Backing | No backing, 3 mm hardboard, 6 mm OSB, 9 mm OSB | Keeps the panel’s shape and transfers the fasteners’ load from the wall to the board |
| Filler | PE foam mat (START or LITE), XPE (cross-linked PE foam) 33 kg/m³, polyurethane foam | Absorbs the impact. The denser the material, the longer it holds its shape |
| Cover | 650 g/m² PVC fabric or eco-leather | Wear resistance, moisture protection, the look of the gym |
Do you need a rigid backing
This is the main fork in the road, and it is decided not by budget but by the condition of your walls. Padding without a backing is essentially a mat with grommets along the edge: it follows the geometry of the wall. If the wall is flat, all is well. If the wall is brick with lumps of mortar, or in an old building it is uneven by a couple of centimeters, a soft panel will lie in waves and sag in the hollows.
- No backing — the cheapest option, mounted with grommets. For flat walls and gyms with moderate loads.
- 3 mm hardboard — light rigidity: the panel keeps its plane, while the weight barely increases. A compromise option.
- 6 mm OSB — a full rigid backing, roughly 5–10% cheaper than the nine-millimeter one.
- 9 mm OSB — maximum rigidity and mounting durability. Chosen for gyms where athletes constantly hit the wall, and where panels are hung on an uneven surface.
Thickness: from 20 to 50 mm
The thickness of the filler is your travel distance before the hard wall. The logic is the same as with floor covering: the stronger and more frequent the impact, the thicker the layer must be.
| Thickness | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 20 mm | Warm-up areas, corridors, walls behind exercise machines, children’s groups |
| 30 mm | Classes with moderate throwing work, general fitness halls |
| 40 mm | The working standard for a martial arts gym: wrestling, sambo, judo |
| 50 mm | A wall directly adjoining the mat, heavy weight categories, intense throws |
A special case is a wall that the wrestling mat adjoins directly, with no safety zone. There the maximum thickness is always chosen: the athlete reaches the wall at speed and has nothing to slow him down.
Mounting: grommets, Velcro or custom
| Method | How it works | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Grommets | Metal rings along the panel edge; the panel hangs on hooks or anchors | Budget installation, panels without a backing, the option to remove and wash the cover |
| Velcro | Hook-and-loop tape: the mating part is on the wall and the panel is pressed against it | When panels are removed periodically — to wash the wall or change the gym layout |
| Custom | The fastening is designed for a specific wall and a board with a backing | OSB-backed panels, working around radiators and utilities, full-wall covering |
The PROFI line includes a perforated version, and cutouts for radiators, outlets, wall bars and other fixtures are made to the dimensions of your room. That is also why it is better to send measurements before the calculation: full-wall covering and covering that works around risers are priced differently.
Cover: PVC or eco-leather
PVC fabric with a density of 650 g/m² is the standard for a sports gym: it withstands abrasion, can be washed and is not affected by sweat. Eco-leather is softer to the touch and looks more upscale; it is chosen for commercial clubs and gyms that are rented out for photo and video shoots. The covering does not affect impact absorption — it is about wear and appearance.
How much you need and what it costs
The area is calculated straightforwardly: the length of the walls to be protected multiplied by the height of the covering. For example, two walls of 12 m each with covering 1.5 m high make 36 m². Separate short sections, such as the wall between windows, are calculated the same way and then added up.
| Line | Backing and filler | Mounting | Thicknesses | Price from, ₽/m² |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| START | No backing, PE foam mat, PVC 650 | Grommets | 40, 50 mm | 1 170 |
| PROFI 3 | 3 mm hardboard, PVC 650 | Velcro | 30, 40, 50 mm | 1 500 |
| STANDARD | No backing, PE foam + polypropylene sheet | Velcro | 40, 50 mm | 1 710 |
| PROFI 1 | 6 mm OSB, PVC 650 | Custom | 20–50 mm | 1 830 |
| PROFI | 9 mm OSB, PVC 650 | Custom | 20–50 mm | 1 880 |
| START+ | No backing, reinforced LITE PE foam mat | Grommets | 30, 40, 50 mm | 2 040 |
| PROFI+ | 9 mm OSB, polyurethane foam, eco-leather, finished height 1.25 m | Custom | 40, 50 mm | 2 480 |
| PROFI 2 | 9 mm OSB, XPE (cross-linked PE foam) 33 kg/m³ | Custom | 30–50 mm | 2 920 |
If only separate areas are covered rather than the whole wall, ready-made panels sold individually work out cheaper: on a 9 mm OSB backing, 1.25×0.5 m, from 1 140 ₽ per 20 mm panel; on a hardboard backing, 1.2×0.5 m, from 900 ₽. The final price depends on the order volume: the larger the area, the lower the price per meter.
Documents for procurement
A school, a youth sports school or any organization running a procurement needs product documents to accompany the commercial quote. For wall padding there is a product data sheet and a certificate of conformity; they are in the “Documents and certificates” section and are attached to the quote on request. The data sheets for our other products are there too, if the gym is being equipped as a whole.
Step by step
- Measure the length of the walls you are protecting and the height of the covering.
- Check how flat the wall is — this determines whether you need a backing.
- Choose the thickness by intensity: 20–30 mm for auxiliary areas, 40–50 mm for the working area.
- Choose the mounting: if you remove the panels periodically — Velcro; if you hang them once — grommets or custom.
- Send the dimensions and a diagram of the wall with radiators and switches so that the calculation is final.
- Wall padding — the full category — lines, thicknesses, prices
- Wall padding catalog with filters
- Wrestling mats — floor covering for the same purpose
- Turnkey gym fit-out — if the gym is being equipped as a whole
- Documents and certificates — product data sheets for procurement
Send us the wall lengths, the covering height and a photo of the room — we will select the line and thickness, account for radiators and switches, and calculate the cost based on your volume. Manufactured in Dimitrovgrad, delivery across Russia.
In brief: frequently asked questions
Why is wall padding needed?+
So that an athlete who is carried beyond the edge of the mat does not hit the wall. In wrestling and sambo this happens regularly: a throw carries momentum, and the athlete stops against the wall. Padding also dampens noise and gives the gym a tidier look.
What padding thickness is needed?+
From 20 to 50 mm. 20–30 mm is used for warm-up areas, corridors and walls behind exercise machines; 40 mm is the working standard for a martial arts gym; 50 mm is for walls right next to the mat and for gyms with heavy weight categories.
Is a rigid backing needed?+
It depends on the wall. A panel without a backing follows the wall's geometry, so on an uneven surface it will wave. Hold a straight 2 m straightedge against the wall: if the gap is more than a centimeter, choose the version with 3 mm fiberboard or 6–9 mm OSB backing.
How is wall padding attached?+
In three ways. Grommets are rings along the panel edge, the most economical mounting. Velcro is a hook-and-loop strip, convenient when panels are removed periodically. Custom mounting is designed for a specific wall and is used for OSB-backed panels.
How much does wall padding cost?+
The wholesale price starts at 1 170 ₽ per m² for the START line and goes up to 2 920 ₽ per m² for PROFI 2 with cross-linked PE foam. Ready-made panels are sold individually from 900 ₽ per panel on a fiberboard backing, size 1.2×0.5 m.
How do you calculate the area needed?+
Multiply the length of the walls to be protected by the height of the padding. Two 12 m walls padded to 1.5 m come to 36 m². Short sections are calculated the same way and added up.
